RENTING YOUR HOME

Choosing a business address when you rent your home

When you rent your home, using it as your business address may be restricted by your tenancy agreement. That can leave you looking for another address for business post, your company’s registered office or a director’s service address.

Mailboxx gives you a separate address for business post, with scanning or forwarding to help you manage what arrives. A director’s service address is included with either plan. Select the £5 + VAT monthly registered address add-on during signup if you also need a company registered office.

Give your business its own address

Look at what your tenancy agreement says about using the property as a business address, registering a company there or using it as a director’s service address. If it restricts the use you have in mind, choose a separate address service that covers that use.

For example, a consultant renting a flat might prefer to keep the flat off invoices and company records. They can use Mailboxx for business post and add the registered address service for their company’s registered office, while keeping their home address separate.

Using a property as a business address and carrying out work there are separate questions. A Mailboxx address helps with the address use; it does not change any tenancy conditions about work at the property. If those conditions also affect your business, review them separately. GOV.UK has guidance on permissions and insurance for working from home.

Decide what the address is for

List where the address will appear. You may need a postal contact for customers, an address for supplier letters and, if you operate through a company, the relevant company-record addresses.

These are different uses. Check the requirements of each organisation and the permissions given by the address provider. A mailbox is not proof of your residential address and does not turn a home-based business into one with separate trading premises.

Compare the ways your post can reach you

Using your home keeps mail close but shares the address wherever you publish it. An accountant’s address can be convenient, particularly for tax letters, if you agree how other post reaches you. A separate mailbox lets you manage your business post through scanning or forwarding.

Choose around how you use your post. If you mainly want to read letters and share them with an adviser, online scans may suit you. If you regularly need paper originals, compare forwarding times and charges.

Plan for the next move

You can keep your Mailboxx address when you move home, while your service remains active. Your business postal address can stay the same, and you can easily update your forwarding address in the app.

Before moving, update your UK forwarding address in the Mailboxx app. You’ll also need to tell banks, insurers and other organisations your new home address where they require it.

Before you open a mailbox

  1. Check what your tenancy allows when using your home as a business or company address.

  2. List where you’d like to use the address, including company records.

  3. Confirm the address and what you can use it for.

  4. Compare how you want to receive your post and the plan and optional-service prices.

  5. Complete your account checks, then update senders once your mailbox is ready.

Mailboxx is for UK residents with a UK forwarding address and proof of address. Choose scanning or forwarding, with a director’s service address included in either plan. Select the £5 + VAT monthly registered address add-on during signup if you also need a company registered office.
